Goths in the Grass

Thanks to Bex
Gothiness: 8 Sweatiness: 9

Bring out your dead! Bring out your dead! Bex and her Zeitgeist Zero cohorts lay themselves prone beneath the Daystar in the pursuit of literary greatness. Witness their pasty white skin transforming before your eyes! Weep as their black attire clings with little sweaty beads to their sensitive souls. Sniff their sweaty boots and lay your head next to theirs as they attempt to create a Gothy FlashMob-Scrabble-Performance-Art interpretation - if we all lie together with these brave unfortunates, we will be seen from space, forming the phrase "Generation X". I am Gothymandias, Goth of Goths, Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!

We Dictate Fashion

Thanks to Lester 'Molester' Jones, as ever.
Gothiness: off the scale Sweatiness: 8
At last it's happened my Darkling hoardes - the good people of i-D Magazine have been moved to create a Goth-based fashion shoot in honour of our work! We have dictated a new fashion! See here! http://i-donline.com/2011/10/goths-in-hot-weather/ Now, who's up for spending a week going around Hoxton or the East Village with a pogo stick and timing how long it takes for some media whore hipster nincompoop to buy one and sit in a cafe with it resting against his table while he cruises Facebook on his i-Pad 2?

P.S. What's slightly scary is that bus actually goes past my office whilst I write this tripe. How did they know?

Big Mac and Lies

Thanks to 'a reader'

Gothiness: 8 Sweatiness: 6
Whilst sitting in the upper food court at Epsom's sparkling Ashley Centre (spiritual home to all suicidalists), one quick-witted reader spotted this: a full death metal / jugalo / Kiss wannabe Gothrocker enjoying a cold one whilst contemplating the finer symbolism of Proust's 'A la recherche du temps perdu' as juxtaposed with the lyrics to Closer by NiN between Bacon Double Suffering burgers. Note the standard reaction of most norm's - turn your back and pretend he's not there (which is how he likes it), with the exception of one young innocent child, formulating the question in her head "Daddy, why is that man dressed all funny? He's spooky." We'll never know, little girl, we'll never know.

sidenote: Submitted by 'a reader' - with a secret to hide, perhaps? Maybe a militant vegan with a secret yearning for recovered meat products. Are you a vegetarian who secretly yearns for meat? Or a vegan desperate for a ham and cheese omelette? The Jeremy Kyle team want to hear from you!

ITV needs you!

stolen from a frankly superb looking wedding in Russia
Gothiness: 9 Sweatiness: 8 (under the collar)
I've had had a request from ITV which gives me the excuse to finally post one of these great images of full-on Gothy nuptials action. Hard working Nina Clement is looking for a Goth couple who are getting married to shoot for their Living TV show, Four Weddings. I'm guessing it has something to do with weddings. She wants couples who are getting married in Feb / March this year (don't blame Nina for the short notice, production cycles are getting worse and worse, in my day we had 6 years to research and we didn't have no internet, plus we shot on real video not that mini DV crap, kids these days etc etc). If you fit the bill, let me know and I'll pass you along to Nina. Hey, at least your wedding video should be in focus.
p.s. Frankly, Nina doesn't seem too bothered whether you're Goth or not. she just needs someone getting married! soon! help!

Wave Gothic Festival

Gothiness: 9 Sweatiness: 6
So, the festive cheer of the non-demononational holiday period has been and gone, and the burning question on your lips is this: what is the Goth-about-town wearing this season? Fear not, darkling, I can confidently predict the demise of the Gothasol (though as you can see, some tradgoth diehards are clinging on to yesteryear's look). Goths and Gothettes, I give you.. THE GOTHWING. Or fan as some might call it. The Impressive Clergyman calls it a gothwing, and who are we to doubt the word of a trend forecaster such as he? The contextual usage, he tells me, should be thus; " I was up that Camden Market recently and spotted Lauren Laverne fanning her face with a rather fetching Victorian lace Gothwing." Pretty in Pink

Romina here claims that this was worn for an 80's themed day at school, but you and I know she's fibbing don't we? Look at the tell-tale signs: 2nd hand tails, hair draped over the eyes, too many necklaces - the similarity to Molly Ringwald and Ducky is unmistakable. Two Goths - Spotted!

Dear Lord how do I ever watch Lazytown with my daughter again? My mind! My mind is bleeding! Find a happy place, find a happy place, find a happy place...

Closer to Goth Than Thee

Thanks to Molly

Gothiness: 8 Sweatiness: 5
Molly writes "I'm in this photo, and I am not goth, but this girl is goooood. She was rollin kinda deep, but I liked her the best. I think it was the spiky mini backpack." And she's right. She's also at the vanguard of a new trend I've been noticing: many of you are sending in photos grabbed opportunistically when in the presence of Goth, and I love 'em - so I have a new challenge for you: If you are vanilla, send me pics of you standing next to hot goths, preferably with thumbs aloft (as so ably demonstrated by Molly here). If you are Goth (and I bow to you my dark masters), then I need pics of you standing next to the most incongrous item or person you can find - old grannies, police officers, dwarves. In fact, extra points for dwarves.

Goth like an Egyptian

I know it's the 80's Mark, but you're in EGYPT. Wearing a LEATHER JACKET. I'm proud of you.

Kick the Pain Away

Thanks to DeHuman8

Gothiness: 6 Sweatiness: 8
There's long been a terrible dearth of Goths in sport, who knows why? Maybe their darkness gives them an unfair psychological advantage over the opposition, maybe long poetry writing sessions render them useless to physical activity, maybe their minds are on higher things such as Snakebite & Black consumption. Whatever the reason, DeHuman8 and his dark followers are redressing that imbalance by braving the Daystar to reach the peak of Goth endurance: 90 minutes with no shade against the Grand Society of Water Rats All Star Charity and Daytime Chat Show Presenters Second 11. Watch out dark ones - that Phillip Schofield's a fouling bastard! Our Nightmare Team of choice has to be:

Barcelona isn't Goth Friendly

Anna Lucylle writes "The Montjuic park isn't the best place to visit
at high noon if you're planning on keeping your skin a human
colour... thanks to my ungothly t-shirt and loose pants
combo, I'm currently sporting a Zoidberg-red epidermis.
Well, at least my feet were covered nicely! :-P" Considering how many Spanish tourists hang out at Camden Market, it seems odd that Barcelona isn't the source of all Goths. I blame Gaudi.
Bonnie Downing is clearly a kindred spirit. See her analysis of Florida Goths here http://peculiarbeautyblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/being-goth-in-florida-must-be.html

How they suffer for their Art

Melissa writes:
"When I was in metal band, once we were talked into playing an outdoor festival show in the day time in the summer here in Arkansas. I was wearing my signature very punk/metal/goth glam, ultra skimpy outfit as usual. What I didn’t think about was how long I’d be on stage in the direct sun, and my absolutely victorian pale skin was burned to a crisp. The pain of the sunburn on all but the covered (maybe a foot and half square) area of my body wasn’t the worst part, though. It was that I was wearing fishnet stockings and the sunburn left a fishnet sunburn! It looked absolutely ridiculous, even after the red burn healed, the tan left behind was still in the fishnet pattern."

Ouch! Still, good to see that Goths (and yes, punk/metal counts here) can use the sun for scarification, saving themselves a fortune at tattoo parlours. Quick thinking, Gothette!

I'm indebted to a Ms Claire Shiels, who writes; "Perhaps someone could invent a light black “Goth cloth” specifically for the hotter climes?" Splendid idea. Any thoughts, friends? Perhaps a Gore-Tex Rubber or Tri-Climate leather?

The Bloggomist: Today’s Dish/Yesterday’s Spam
Lifestyle Opinion

I generally don’t like the Q&A style. It’s kind of slacker-y, like picking up a turkey from Boston Market for the family Thanksgiving dinner. But sometimes Q&A is the best way to preserve genius, which is what I consider Tom Lenham, the British creator of the Goths In Hot Weather© blog, where photos of eye-catching Goths are rated according to “Gothiness” and “Sweatiness” (more explanation below). And like Boston Market turkeys, Lenham is really quite delightful.

Where on earth did you get the idea for Goths in Hot Weather?
I’ve joked with my friends for years about how I’d like to do a site about how Goths suffer so much in the sun, so one day I just decided to do it, and it seems to have entertained a lot of people so far. I used to be a Goth and remember struggling ‘round Camden Market in London during the 80’s with a full-length coat, fedora hat and Cuban heel cowboy boots on in the mid-summer and cringe at what I must have looked like, but at the time I thought I was the coolest thing on the planet – youth does that to you, I suppose! I’m quite interested in the juxtaposition of traditional scenes being interrupted by unconventional imagery and alternative lifestyles, such as a Goth dressed in rubber and leather sitting on a beach building a sandcastle. I think it does two things: for one thing it makes us question our moral values and judgments based on appearance rather than behavior. For another, it’s fucking funny to laugh at.

Lenham captioned this photograph "Unhappy Meal."

What are some of the identifiable criteria used in determining “Gothiness” and “Sweatiness”?
That all depends on the shot. It’s not just about a hot day, it could be quite overcast or even inside, but if the subject is wearing a full leather coat and lace skirts, then they’re going to push the sweatiness rating up. Makeup has a big influence, all that face paint can’t be comfortable!

You seem very mysterious. It’s hard to find out much about the brains behind this operation – who is Tom Lenham? Tell me a little bit about yourself.
Well, I suppose I should write something enigmatic here, but I’m a fairly normal person. I’ve been a Goth, a rocker, and a disco freak amongst other things. These days I carry around a little more funk than I used to, but I like to think I can still pimp myself up now and then! I’m a father now (god, that’s tiring) so I don’t have a great deal of time for hanging out, but being an ex-theatre director and stage manager (mainly musicals in the West End dahling), I still like a bit of showbiz – and deep down I’m your standard attention whore so Goths In Hot Weather’s success has been a real delight. It’s incredibly flattering to know people appreciate its humor, so I get warm and fuzzy every time I log on, even if some of the comments are pedantic to say the least!

How would you describe the Goth scene in England? Do you get a lot of U.S. photos? Are most photographs local to yourself? Do you have a photographer who shoots for this website?
Goth and alternative culture is, in my view, much more accepted in the States than in the U.K. Over here, it’s very much a subculture with its own scene and hangouts, although there are many subdivisions within it (never call an Industrialist a Goth!). Goths in London are only seen rushing from one gothy place to another – they rarely stop in between. In America (and also mainland Europe) it seems that people are better at taking smaller elements of all sorts of cultures and combining them as part of the general social milieu. I suppose that says something about the mentality of British people and the nature of Island Races, unwilling to accept anything other than their own point of view. But I may be wrong – I’m no anthropologist; mostly I just like laughing at people in leather trousers.

When the site started, it was very U.K.-centric, but now about 80% of the views come from America and Canada, so I’ve tried to be inclusive without losing that wry sense of Britishness. The shots come in from all over the world – quite a lot from Germany (big Goth scene there) and Spain, but probably half the shots I use are from the U.K., plus of course I shoot quite a few myself. The best thing about it has been the journey it’s taken with submissions; first of all, people would just write in with comments, then they started sending in shots they found on the net. Now they’re actually seeing people in the street, thinking of the site, and taking a shot specifically to send me, which is really great – or at least it would be if they managed to get a shot froim the front rather than sneakily snapping someone’s back as they walk away. Next step is to persuade people to actually meet up and pose for bespoke shoots…

What is a Didi-Goth?
I get asked this a lot. I believe in the States they’re referred to as Gothlings or Kindergoths, but basically it’s a young or trainee Goth who hasn’t gone the whole way yet – definition below:

Didi-Goth /gɒθ/ [after Diddy] – noun
1. one of a Teutonic people who in the 3rd to 5th centuries invaded and settled in parts of the Roman Empire, but left after two weeks as their visa had expired.
2. A young or fledgling Goth, too depressed to consider him/herself part of the rest of school, but too happy to become fully immersed in Goth culture. Writes particularly awful poetry, usually about how no one understands them, or why the boy in class won’t go out with them.

Origin:
bef. 900; ME Gothe (after G. Chaucer): “There was a Wif of Bathe, she was-a gat toothed and prood, black did she wear, and depressive; yet Goth she was-a not, morever a Didi, owning nought but one Cure album, and that alone being a Greateste-Hits.”

Which photos are your favorite, and why?
I like them all – I’m pretty strict with what I post, if I don’t laugh out loud when I see it, then I don’t put it up there. I really like the Indestructigoths shot, because it’s just so out there – two people in full gear on a classic British sea front. I’m also a big fan of Queen of the Sunshine Goths – she’s about as close to a poster-girl for the site as you can get, with the ice cream and crazy hair. The comments about her were also a real surprise, a lot of people found her really attractive, which I think is brilliant. That shot really set the tone for the website, in fact – it’s all about poking fun, but within an affectionate and respectful environment. I definitely don’t want the site to be vitriolic or abusive, as I have a genuine affection for my subject matter. Having said that, Flock of SeaGoths is just great – he couldn’t be more clichéd if he tried!
